HMS Ark Royal made its final journey out of Portsmouth Harbour yesterday. The ship is now on route to Turkey, where it was bought by a recycling company ‘Leyal’ for £2.9 million.
The aircraft carrier, built in 1981 and capable of carrying 22 aircraft, led forces during the Iraq War invasion in 2003 and saw active service in Bosnia. She was de-commissioned in 2010 by the coalition due to spending cuts, 5 years before originally scheduled.
Hundreds of onlookers including former crew members, many in black armbands, watched as the vessel was towed out of Portsmouth. Did you see this mighty ship leave British waters?
