Rolex Fastnet Race

2019 Skippers’ Highlights – Kieran James

Following Steve’s blog last week, we move on to another one of our skippers, this time one of our ops team!

Skippers’ Highlights – Kieran JamesSince joining our operations team in May 2019, Kieran has been one of our core skippers, working on a range of charters from private family events to cable pulls with our sister company Commercial Rib Charter… but what was his favourite?

My favourite charter of the year has to be the start of the Rolex Fastnet Race… it was an amazing experience from the start and the vast scale of the event was incredible to be apart of! There were over 300 boats racing on the Solent which was hard work to navigate around but great fun.

I was operating as a ‘chase boat’ for one of the sailing teams in the Class 40 category along with 7 other SRC Ribs & Lysander (our motor yacht).

Half of us collected our guests from Trinity Landing, Cowes whilst the other half met their guests outside Southampton Harbour Hotel in Ocean Village. All vessels then assembled just outside of Cowes to spectate the start of the Fastnet! We followed the yacht west across the Solent and through The Needles where we left them on their route to Fastnet Rock before returning to finish in Plymouth. After the excitement of the start, we returned our guests to Gunwharf Quays where they disembarked ready for lunch.

We’re looking forward to welcoming back the start of the Fastnet in 2021, with a new finish location!
