Where is the Snow!?

I wonder if we are going to see scenes like this again this winter…

These are pictures from the beginning of December last year, we were suppose to have a group of 60 out on the ribs that day…they sensibly re-arranged.

Place your bets now people!

SRC do Movember…

November each year for thousands of participants turns in to Movember, where gentlemen partake in growing facial fuzz to raise money for the very good cause of testicular and prostate cancer.

Our Head Bosun Bligh Julius has decided to take part this year…here he is on day one with baby soft skin….

Our Placement Student Tom…

Tom O’Doherty aged 15 from Charters School in Sunningdale has spent the last week with the team here at Solent Rib Charter on placement.

Tom has had a varied week of days in the warehouse working on boat maintenance and ensuring they are in 1st class condition, assisting on treasure hunts on the Solent and Thames (even driving the boats at times!) as well as event preparation in the office. He also now knows how to tie a bowline!

Tom has hugely impressed the team here with his confidence, initiative, and above all else the amount of effort he has put in to each and every task set to him. We will gladly have him back during future summers for a little part time work!

So what did Tom think?….

‘Working at Solent Rib Charter has been an experience that words cannot describe. I have had a brilliant week and I couldn’t of asked for anymore. I thoroughly enjoyed myself this week and have learnt so much. It was a real hand on work experience which was a great contrast to a class room. I was treated like and adult this week which I feel has given me a step up on becoming an adult. It exposed me to what a workplace will really be like as well and this gave me a different mentality to have a real positive head on which I’m not always like in class. Everyone that I met and worked with were all brilliant teachers, each of them helped me push myself and learn about the business. I gained a lot of skills which will help me in the future reach my goal of becoming a P.E. Teacher or a Instructor of some sort. All in all the week has been 10/10!’

Super Yacht Cup comes to Cowes

The Superyacht Cup Regatta Series is the longest running regatta in Europe and the Mediterranean; now in its 16th year.

In 2012 the Super Yacht Cup is hosting a special edition of the event in Cowes to coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games. This will be the first ever Super Yacht Cup regatta in Cowes including a Round the Isle of Wight race, the same route as the first ever America’s Cup in 1851 (then called the Hundred Guinea Cup).

Solent Rib Charter can help you get up close to the action by chartering a Rib for half or a full day. Our skippers are extremely ‘Solent savvy’ and can advise where is best to see the competition, a good lunch stop and anything else you may need or want to know.  Contact us for more information!

The America’s Cup

The 34th America’s Cup is in full flow down in Plymouth, and Solent Rib Charter are extremely proud to be the official Rib supplier.
The event began back in 1851, when a schooner named America (after its home country) won a British sailing race watched by Queen Victoria from the Royal Yacht in the Solent (oh yes, local history!)
The America’s Cup is said to represent ‘the singular pursuit of excellence’ and is known for being the most difficult and oldest trophy in international sport to win… just to back this claim up there were nine contests for the America’s Cup before the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
The 2011 contest consists of three main stages; the America’s Cup World Series, the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup Finals. The Boats (including 72 fool catamarans) are state-of-the-art new designs capable of speeds of 30 knots; this could even be exceeded considering the weather forecast!
A few photos and more updates from the SRC team down in Plymouth can be found on our Facebook page; ‘like’ us to follow and find out more.

Lymington is the place to be!

Lymington has recently been identified as Britain’s most desirable coastal town, and we at Solent Rib Charter agree! Just on the edge of the New Forest the beautiful market town which boasts two marinas and two sailing clubs came first in a study of the finest seaside resorts according to the Telegraph last month, winning over Sandbanks in Poole (second) and Heswall on the Wirral (third).

The weather was one of the statistics taken in to consideration including the hours of sunshine and temperature; the weather is generally better than further west on the coast as the town is sheltered by the Isle of Wight.

We agree that Lymington is a first class destination and always promote the town as a starting location for our charters. The town has great transport links to and from London as well as fabulous venues for accommodation close by.

Solent Sights

Last weekend the Solent saw the arrival of the worlds’ newest and most powerful aircraft carrier yet; The USS George H W Bush… The Solent Rib Charter team couldn’t resist going to have a look!

The 1,100ft carrier docked in Stokes Bay near Portsmouth on her maiden deployment after participating in the multi-national Excercise Saxton Warrior the the Roay Navy (HMS Dauntless and Gloucester) and other Nato forces.

The USS George H W Bush which was commissioned in 2009 weighs in at 97000 tonnes and can carry in excess of 70 aircraft; a mix of F18 jets, Seahawk helicopters and E2C AWAC’s planes. Super Bush (as we have renamed her) has over 6000 sailors and airecrew aboard.

Powered with two nuclear reactors Super Bush can exceed 30 knots and could operate for more than 20 years without refueling – slightly longer than our Ribs!

Hope the crew enjoyed their time ashore, we will look forward to seeing USS George H W Bush again sometime.
