Largs to Lymington Cycle…

Back in November Bligh, Hannah and Dan decided that they wanted a new challenge. After a little thought they decided to organise a charity cycle ride with friends Josh and Jason from Largs to Lymington; both locations with marinas in the Yacht Haven Group where SRC mainly operate from.

The event starting on 6th May took the group on a 500 mile journey to Dumfries, Kendal, Daresbury, Shobdon and Swindon before reaching Lymington (and the Haven Bar!) on Friday 11th May 2012.

The team wanted to raise money for Solent Rib Charter’s chosen charity The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, who take young people sailing to rebuild their confidence following treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses. SRC supports the Trust by providing RIB’s for the Trust’s yacht trips. The team also have their own personal reasons for wanting to support the Trust and give something back to such a worthy cause.

The 6 day event had its ups and downs, quite literally! On day 2 the group had to conquer Shap Peak in the Lake District, with Birdlip hill in Gloucester on day 5. The peril of what the group were doing was highlighted on day 5 when Dan unfortunately came off his bike and broke his collar bone… luckily fellow work mate Tom was just down the road on a meeting, so came to his rescue!

With online donations and the pre-cycle auction the group have raised over £4000 so far, great result! If you would like to show your support please follow this link to sponsor them. Huge thanks to all those who helped the team make it happen and donated their time, services and products  – Progressive Resources, Cycle Experience, Sign It, Onyx Events, Yacht Haven Group, Rhinefield House Hotel, Careys Manor, Stephen Lees…. we couldn’t have done it without you! :)

Round the Island Race

Organised by the Island Sailing Club the J.P. Morgan Round the Island Race one day event regularly attracts around 16000 participants over 1700 boats, making it the fourth largest British sporting event after the London Marathon and the Great North and  Great South runs.

This year will see the 81st race taking place on Saturday 30th June 2012

It is an early start for those taking part with the first race group setting off at 0600 from Cowes. A further 10 groups will then start every 10 minutes heading anti-clockwise round the island over the 50nm course.

If you can’t get our on a Rib to see the race there are plenty of good view points from the island and mainland. Let’s hope the winds are a little nicer to us than last year!

Manches Cup

The Manches Cup is a large Solent sailing regatta for the legal community that this year will take place between Friday 18th and Sunday 20th May 2012 from Port Hamble Marina, just under a month away!

Crews from law firms, barristers, chambers and suppliers to the legal industry can take part across a range of classes no matter what level of sailing experience they have.

In addition to the sailing racing there are plenty of events going on ashore including a regatta party and dinner – great opportunity for networking or just socialising!

Let us know if you need a Rib to get out on the water and keep up with the action!

Introducing Skipper George Glennie

George Glennie is one of the latest members of the SRC team.

When not cruising around in his Ford KA (otherwise known as Vera) George enjoys nothing more than skippering one of our Ribs. Ever the professional in front of the client, George likes to have a bit of fun in ‘down time’.

Here are a few photos you may recognise from our Facebook page…

Above; thumbs up from George after cleaning his boat, and taking some time out to lounge around… Below; enjoying the elements.

Why does George love working for us?

‘It’s hard to say what I love most about working for Solent Rib Charter. Bligh’s torrents of verbal abuse are of course quite high on the list and have made me feel at home since the very beginning, but there’s so much more… I could tell how proud my superiors were when I successfully ‘launched’ a boat recently and the exhaustive safety report that was put together as a result of the launch only reinforced this. I think what really makes it for me though is the concern that everyone shows for one another such as the supportive howls of laughter from Ed and Jack when I hit myself in the face with a winch handle. When all these factors come together it’s really not hard to see why I love working for SRC so much.’

The J Class Association

We are extremely proud and pleased to announce that the J Class Association has chosen Solent Rib Charter to be the official Rib partner for the Falmouth and Solent Regattas this year.

It will be a spectacular sight to see; for the first time in their history more than four J Class yachts will race together in Falmouth between 26th and 30th June and on the Solent between 18th and 21st July 2012.

Why have the J Class Association chosen us?…

‘Their pedigree and experience at big events means they know exactly how to operate to give you the safest, most exciting experience possible. As the Official Rib Partner of the J Class Association, these ribs will also be on marshalling duties; you will be the closest you can possibly be to a racing J without being on board.’ The J Class Association.

Dorset Police’s Rib Tender

Solent Rib Charter are proud to have been awarded the tender for Dorset Police’s requirement for 39 Ribs in Weymouth for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

This contract has been awarded to us along with the LOCOG contract; a requirement for 24 Ribs in Weymouth and a further 8 Ribs in Hyde Park.

Looks like it is going to be a very exciting and busy year!

New River Thames Video

Video is such a great way of demonstrating to our clients and guests what Solent Rib Charter has to offer; not just a ‘day out on the water’ - an experience remember.

We have just added our latest video ‘River Thames Rib Blast Experience’ to Vimeo and You Tube…. Take a look and let us know what you think!

Olympic facts

As the official Rib supplier to LOCOGSolent Rib Charter were lucky enough to be invited to a meeting in London last week for official suppliers to the Games.

There were some interesting speakers including Lord Coe, Doug Arnot – Director of Operations of the Games, Dragon Deborah Meaden, and athletes Jonathan Edwards and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson who all highlighted how amazing this will be for our country, the biggest UK event we will see most probably in our lifetimes.

All fixed 2012 Olympic venues (34 of them) have been completed and handed over on time and on budget, very impressive!

  • LOCOG suppliers together will provide 180,000 staff
  • 2,000 buses and coaches will be shuttling people to and from the sites

  • 14 million meals are expected to be served
  • 10,000,000 spectators will attend
  • 23,000 journalists will have access to the venues 2 weeks prior to the games opening.
