…And we are very excited about it! Some very interesting people spoke at the conference last week which was attended by over 430 people; mostly managing directors and senior executives from London 2012 Sponsors, suppliers and Licensees.

A great video can be found at http://www.london2012.com/get-involved/business-network/locog-supplier-conference-informed-inspired-and-excited-.php, take a look.

Olympic facts

As the official Rib supplier to LOCOGSolent Rib Charter were lucky enough to be invited to a meeting in London last week for official suppliers to the Games.

There were some interesting speakers including Lord Coe, Doug Arnot – Director of Operations of the Games, Dragon Deborah Meaden, and athletes Jonathan Edwards and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson who all highlighted how amazing this will be for our country, the biggest UK event we will see most probably in our lifetimes.

All fixed 2012 Olympic venues (34 of them) have been completed and handed over on time and on budget, very impressive!

Here are a few other interesting facts for you….

  • 23,000 Security guards will man the games, with 70000 staff
  • LOCOG suppliers together will provide 180,000 staff
  • 2,000 buses and coaches will be shuttling people to and from the sites
  • 2.5 million square feet of marquees will be set up
  • 13,000 PC’s have been bought by LOCOG
  • 14 million meals are expected to be served
  • 10,000,000 spectators will attend
  • 23,000 journalists will have access to the venues 2 weeks prior to the games opening.
  • 2.7 million Bananas have been ordered for althletes alone.

We are incredibly excited about the Games; hope to see you down in Weymouth!

SRC do Movember…

November each year for thousands of participants turns in to Movember, where gentlemen partake in growing facial fuzz to raise money for the very good cause of testicular and prostate cancer.

Our Placement Student Tom…

Tom O’Doherty aged 15 from Charters School in Sunningdale has spent the last week with the team here at Solent Rib Charter on placement.

Tom has had a varied week of days in the warehouse working on boat maintenance and ensuring they are in 1st class condition, assisting on treasure hunts on the Solent and Thames (even driving the boats at times!) as well as event preparation in the office. He also now knows how to tie a bowline!

Tom has hugely impressed the team here with his confidence, initiative, and above all else the amount of effort he has put in to each and every task set to him. We will gladly have him back during future summers for a little part time work!

So what did Tom think?….

‘Working at Solent Rib Charter has been an experience that words cannot describe. I have had a brilliant week and I couldn’t of asked for anymore. I thoroughly enjoyed myself this week and have learnt so much. It was a real hand on work experience which was a great contrast to a class room. I was treated like and adult this week which I feel has given me a step up on becoming an adult. It exposed me to what a workplace will really be like as well and this gave me a different mentality to have a real positive head on which I’m not always like in class. Everyone that I met and worked with were all brilliant teachers, each of them helped me push myself and learn about the business. I gained a lot of skills which will help me in the future reach my goal of becoming a P.E. Teacher or a Instructor of some sort. All in all the week has been 10/10!’

Super Yacht Cup comes to Cowes

The Superyacht Cup Regatta Series is the longest running regatta in Europe and the Mediterranean; now in its 16th year.

In 2012 the Super Yacht Cup is hosting a special edition of the event in Cowes to coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games. This will be the first ever Super Yacht Cup regatta in Cowes including a Round the Isle of Wight race, the same route as the first ever America’s Cup in 1851 (then called the Hundred Guinea Cup).

Solent Rib Charter can help you get up close to the action by chartering a Rib for half or a full day. Our skippers are extremely ‘Solent savvy’ and can advise where is best to see the competition, a good lunch stop and anything else you may need or want to know.  Contact us for more information!
